Willie Clancy Summer School Music and Dance Classes

Enrollment

Register for all music and dance classes at the Community Hall between 2 and 6pm on Saturday, 5th July, or at class venues from 9.30am on Monday. The fee is €140 Euro, £130 Sterling or $250 US payable by cash or cheque to Muiris Ó Rócháin or Harry Hughes, Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Miltown Malbay. The fee covers all classes, workshops, lectures and recitals. Registration for the week costs students less than half price for all events.

Note that there is no need to register in advance, except in the case of piping classes (see below). Those wishing to pay in advance can do so through the organisers who will issue a receipt which is exchanged for a registration when enrolling.

Music Classes

All classes and workshops are held daily from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday, in various locations in and around Miltown Malbay.

Beginners may attend Dúchas an Cheoil (the Scope of Irish Music), the Traditional Singing Workshop or Set Dancing Classes. There are no classes for beginners in instrumental music except on pipes. Classes will be graded in all instruments.

The numbers of graded classes shown below are approximate.

Piping Classes and Pipers Workshop

Eighteen classes held in the West Clare Resource Centre, Ballard Road, Miltown Malbay, and in private houses. The class and workshop instructors are selected by Na Píobairí Uilleann.

Whistle and Flute Classes

Eighteen whistle classes and eighteen flute classes held in the National School, Miltown Malbay, and in private houses. The instructors will include Mary Bergin, Paul McGrattan, June McCormack, Conal Ó Gráda, Gary Hastings, Seán Potts, Anne Sheehy, Seán Ryan, Fintan Vallely, Mick Crehan, Brid O'Donohue, Billy Clifford, Mick Hand, Róisín Nic Dhonncha, Louise Mulcahy, Tara Diamond, Eamon Cotter, Mick O'Connor, Marcas Ó Murchú, Kevin Crawford, Marion McCarthy, Maureen McGrattan, Eibhlín de Paor, Ciarán Somers, Adrian McCarron, Catherine McEvoy, Geraldine Cotter, Peter Phelan, Aoife Granville, Siobhán Hogan.

Concertina Classes

Twelve classes held in the National School, Miltown Malbay, and in private houses, taught by Noel Hill, Marty O'Keeffe, Chris Droney, Mary Ellen Curtin, Timmy Collins, Francis Droney, Edel Fox, Dympna O'Sullivan, Michelle O'Sullivan, Michelle Mulcahy, Hugh Healy, Claire Keville, Jack Talty, Jackie McCarthy, Katie O'Sullivan, Aoife Kelly.

Banjo Classes

Eight classes taught by Kieran Hanrahan, John Carty, Jody Moran, Stephen Madden and Muireann Banks in McAuley House, Spanish Point.

Harmonica Classes

Two classes by Mark Kinsella and Rick Epping in Church of Ireland Community Centre, Spanish Point.

Button Accordion Classes

Eight classes for double and single row accordion (B/C and C#/D) will be graded at the Quilty Tavern, Quilty. Classes will be held at the following venues in Quilty: GAA Clubhouse, National School, Credit Union House, Leon Centre and Quilty Tavern. Teachers include Jackie Daly, Joe Burke, Charlie Harris, P J Hernon, Conor Keane and Bobby Gardiner.

Fiddle Classes

Thirty classes at St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point, including workshops on Clare fiddle styles will be held in addition to the regular fiddle classes and these workshops will cater only for advanced fiddle players. Demonstrations by noted fiddlers will be a feature of the week. Six classes at the GAA Grounds, Miltown Malbay.

Traditional Singing Workshops

Held at St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point. These will take the form of lectures, group discussions, class participation and demonstrations by traditional singers in Irish and English. The workshops will be conducted by Brian Mullan, BBC Radio Foyle, and Ian Lee, Producer, RTÉ. These are not singing classes.

Dúchas an Cheoil: The Scope of Irish Music

A week-long introduction to the Irish musical tradition at the library, St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point. Masters of the instrumental, dancing and singing (Irish and English) traditions will demonstrate and discuss their crafts with students. Paddy Glackin, renowned traditional fiddle player, and Cathal Goan, an authority on traditional singing, will conduct this course.

Irish Gaelige and Scots Gaelic Classes

Three classes in the National School, Miltown Malbay, 2-3pm, for registered students only.

Dance Classes

Most classes and workshops are held daily from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday, in various locations in and around Miltown Malbay. On Saturday, classes usually finish early to meet for a live music dance at 12pm in the Community Hall.

Antrim Square Set, Televara Set, Moycullen Set, West Kerry Set and Piper's Set

Brooks Academy are a group of teachers who were pioneers of the set dancing revival - Terry Moylan, Irene Martin, Jerry O'Reilly, Mary Friel, Eileen O'Doherty, Terry Cullen. A different member of the group teaches every day at the Community Hall, Miltown Malbay.

Clare Plain Polka Set, Clare Lancers Set, Ballyvourney Reel Set, Mazurka Set, Derradda Set and Cashel Set

Taught by local teacher Mary Clancy at the Armada Hotel, Spanish Point.

Old Style Traditional Step Dancing

Three graded classes, beginners, intermediate and advanced, taught by Margaret Wray, Noel Devery and Patrick O'Dea. At St Joseph's GAA Club, Miltown Malbay.

Beginners: Steps for Sets plus some Clare Sets

A good start for beginning dancers with Paddy Neylon and Geraldine Connolly at the Golf Club, Spanish Point.

Jig and Polka Sets from Sliabh Luachra and West Kerry

Classes with the Cork-Kerry dance master Timmy "the Brit" McCarthy at Áras Chaitríona, St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point.

Conamara Sean Nós Dancing

With Mick Mulkerrin and Mairéad Casey at the Mill Marquee, GAA Grounds, Miltown Malbay.

Steps and Rhythm of the Clare Set

Learn Clare battering from the master, Aidan Vaughan with Betty McCoy at the hall in St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point.

Two-Hand Dances

Three afternoon workshops for registered students only by Marie Garrity on Monday-Wednesday, 6-8 July, 3-6pm, at the Mill Marquee, GAA Grounds, Miltown Malbay.
