Enrollment
Register for all music and dance classes at the Community Hall between 2 and 6pm on Saturday, 4th July, or at class venues from 9.30am on Monday. The fee is €140 Euro, £140 Sterling or $250 US payable by cash or cheque to Muiris Ó Rócháin or Harry Hughes, Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Miltown Malbay. The fee covers all classes, workshops, lectures and recitals. Registration for the week costs students less than half price for all events.Note that there is no need to register in advance, except in the case of piping classes (see below). Those wishing to pay in advance can do so through the organisers who will issue a receipt which is exchanged for a registration when enrolling.
Music Classes
All classes and workshops are held daily from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday, in various locations in and around Miltown Malbay.There are no classes for beginners in instruments except on pipes. Classes will be graded in all instruments. Beginners may attend Dúchas an Cheoil (the Scope of Irish Music), the Traditional Singing Workshop or the Dancing Classes.
The numbers of graded classes shown below are approximate.
Piping Classes and Pipers Workshop
Twenty classes held in the West Clare Resource Centre, Ballard Road, Miltown Malbay, and in private houses. The class and workshop instructors will include Joe Doyle, Tom Clarke, Michael Dunne, Robbie Hannan, Tommy Keane, Nollaig Mac Cárthaigh, Gay McKeon, Seán McKeon, James Mahon, Seamus Ó'Rocháin, Sean Óg Potts, Leo Rickard, Kevin Rowsome, Maitiú Ó Casaide, Tiarnan O' Duincinn, Emmett Gill and Jimmy O'Brien-Moran. Reedmaking classes are taught by Dave Hegarty and Jim Wenham. Ronan Browne and Sean Corcoran lead the Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn class. Peter Browne teaches a class in slow airs, and Bill Hanemann and David Quinn provide pipemaking tuition.Piping classes will be pre-registered. Whistle and Flute Classes
Eighteen whistle classes and eighteen flute classes held in the National School, Miltown Malbay, and in private houses. Eight classes will be graded at the Quilty Tavern, Quilty, and will be held at the following venues in Quilty: GAA Clubhouse, National School, Credit Union House, Leon Centre and Quilty Tavern. Thirty classes at St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point. Workshops on Clare fiddle styles cater only for advanced fiddle players. Demonstrations by noted fiddlers will be a feature of the week. Held at St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point. These will take the form of lectures, group discussions, class participation and demonstrations by traditional singers in Irish and English. The workshops will be conducted by Brian Mullan, BBC Radio Foyle, and Ian Lee, Producer, RTÉ. These are not singing classes.Dúchas an Cheoil: The Scope of Irish Music
A week-long introduction to the Irish musical tradition at the library, St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point. Masters of the instrumental, dancing and singing (Irish and English) traditions will demonstrate and discuss their crafts with students. Paddy Glackin, renowned traditional fiddle player, and Cathal Goan, an authority on traditional singing, will conduct this course.Irish Gaelige and Scots Gaelic Classes
Three classes in the National School, Miltown Malbay, 2-3pm, for registered students only.Dance Classes
Most classes and workshops are held daily from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday, in various locations in and around Miltown Malbay. On Saturday, classes usually finish early to meet for a live music dance at 12pm in the Community Hall.Boyne Set, Melloray Lancers, Paris Set, Valentia Right and Left Set and the Claddagh Set
Brooks Academy are a group of teachers who were pioneers of the set dancing revival - Irene Martin, Jerry O'Reilly, Mary Friel, Eileen O'Doherty, Terry Cullen.
